Freemasonry is one of the world's oldest fraternal organizations. At its heart, it is a society of friends and brothers who use the symbols of stonemasonry — the square, the compass, the level — as guides for living an upright life.
Freemason History
From stonemasons to a fraternity of good men
Freemasonry, or Masonry, consists of fraternal organizations that trace their origins to the local fraternities of stonemasons who, from the end of the fourteenth century, regulated the qualifications of stonemasons and their interactions with authorities and clients. The general consensus among Masonic scholars is that Freemasonry originated in England in the late 16th or early 17th centuries, descending directly or indirectly from the organization of operative stonemasons who built the great cathedrals and castles of the Middle Ages.
Today, Freemasons are a fraternal society made up of men who are concerned with moral and spiritual values. Members — Freemasons, or Masons, as they are also known — are taught the precepts of Freemasonry by means of ritual dramas.
As Freemasons, we continually seek to better ourselves and the world around us through the pursuit of knowledge. At its core, Freemasonry is about the nature of truth. Together, we pursue wisdom through a system of values. We use symbols and allegory because they are the surest way in which our shared truth may be taught. Through these symbols and our shared traditions, each Mason defines and discovers his own unique path.
